Dexter can be considered ‘The Father of Modern MLM’ as most of the training and growth systems used in the most successful MLM organizations in the world use techniques that have roots in Dexter’s training.
In addition to being the foremost distributor in the Amway Corporation, Dexter Yager is also the owner of an equally well known entity that distributes tapes, books, cds, seminars, and other personal development material. As Dexter’s personal business information is not publicly known, one can only speculate at the annual sales and revenue of his Amway business and his personal development and motivational business, although it is thought that his personal company does in excess of several hundred million dollars annually. (His personal Amway distributorship does more than $2 billion annually - yes, "billion").
It is interesting to write this article, because Dexter is probably one of the most influential entrepreneurs in all of American history, yet very few people even recognize his name outside of his devote followers. However, if you get inside the MLM profession and ask around, every single top earner seems to revere what he has done as a pure demonstration of what can be possible. His actual international distributor organization has in excess of 4 million participants in more than 40 countries - impressive, to say the least.
With this background in mind – I want to cover briefly some frequently asked questions people have about Yager and his training from the perspective of someone who is not involved in his Amway business.
First off, I want to dispel any illusion you may have about Dexter Yager scamming people out of money or being a ‘false prophet’ or the other myriad of accusations people have made against him over the years. Whether you become involved in Amway or not, Dexter should be recognized purely for his personal and professional accomplishment. He is personally responsible for the success of thousands of individuals world wide, and for creating business systems that have benefited in excess of 60 million people in the direct sales profession. What he has accomplished has never been achieved by anyone else in the MLM profession and that should be recognized. Dexter’s business principles are sound and legit – they will work for people not only who are involved in Amway, but also those who are interested in professional development in any career path.
Will Dexter’s business building techniques work today as well as they did 40 or 50 years ago? That’s a different topic, however I want to briefly touch on this subject.
You simply cannot deny more than 40 years of success for millions of individuals around the world. However, the market has changed in the last 10 years and it should be recognized that a lot of marketing strategies still being used by people in Dexter’s organization are a little behind the times as far as effectiveness is concerned. For example, there are more direct, simple ways of prospecting that what is done by the vast majority of distributors in the Amway Corporation, and there are better presentation modalities than home meetings with whiteboards.
The most beneficial thing the modern MLM distributor can gleam from reviewing Dexter’s material is that we can all learn a lot from the culture that he has built throughout his Amway organization. It is rare to run into someone who has created so much success for so many individuals world wide – and Dexter is a true rarity in our profession.
Modern recruiting techniques mixed with a strong training and personal development culture will certainly aid our profession into reaching heights that no one has known.
However, that being said, do I think Dexter is the be all and end all of Multi Level Marketing? Absolutely not. In fact, I got started in the MLM business at first in the Amway Corporation, and my experience with his organization was less than spectacular. There was so many tapes, books, seminars, DVD's, and meetings to attend that it was completely confusing as to what I should do to be successful.
When I actually got ahold of Yager's training, it was clear, concise, and powerful - but it was hard to cut through all of the political ranting to get to the core business message.
Years later, looking back, I could have benefited more than I did from my experience in Amway - although I can't say that I'm dissapointed in what I've learned. I believe the modern MLM distributor needs to have strong roots in personal development, but more importantly, they need to understand the basics of prospecting, presenting, and recruiting in the modern age - because let's face it - it is a VERY different business world than existed in the 50's when Dexter was building his organization.
